New Release: The Basketball Diaries Blu-ray

The Basketball Diaries movie sceneBefore he was the king of the world in Titanic and long before he starred in Shutter Island, Leonardo DiCaprio played cult author, poet and punk rocker Jim Carroll in the 1995 drug drama film The Basketball Diaries, which Palm Pictures released on high-definition Blu-ray on April 20, 2010. The disc was priced at $24.99.

The biography movie is based on Carroll’s autobiographical book of the same name, following the early life of Carroll, from rising athlete to homeless junkie.

As well as DiCaprio, the movie also stars Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter), Lorraine Bracco (TV’s Rizzoli & Isles) and Vincent Pastore (TV’s The Sopranos).

The independent film was screened in a limited number of theaters and received good reviews from critics.

For special features, the Blu-ray contains an interview and poetry reading with Carroll, as well as interviews with the cast and director Scott Kalvert (Deuces Wild). The Basketball Diaries was Kalvert’s first feature film.
