News: Despicable Me DVD mobile application

Despicable Me movie sceneUniversal Studios‘ animated Despicable Me bows in theaters on June 27, and Best Buy is already talking about the DVD.

Best Buy reports that it will carry an exclusive DVD version of Despicable Me that will work with a new mobile app called Movie Mode. The free download comes to life via The Minionator, which translates what the film’s mischievous yellow characters are saying throughout the movie.

Movie Mode’s The Minionator will be available for fans to download during the film’s theatrical run too, but it will translate only what the characters are saying during the end credits of the 3D showings.

According to Best Buy, Movie Mode uses new patent-pending technology to provide content for movies during both the theatrical and DVD experiences. It also serves as a locator for theaters showing the movie and Best Buy stores, and can unlock exclusive free content.

The good news is that when it’s on, Movie Mode will automatically dim the screen of the phone, silence the ringer and discourage texting, Best Buy says.

Best Buy plans to offer Movie Mode for future theatrical and DVD releases too.

Movie Mode is available now for most mobile platforms.

Starring the voices of funnymen Steve Carell (Date Night), Russell Brand (Get Him to the Greek) and Ken Jeong (Couples Retreat), Despicable Me follows the villian Gru, whose plans to steal the moon are derailed when he meets three orphan girls.
