News: It's Minion Madness for Despicable Me DVD and Blu-ray

Despicable Me movie sceneUniversal Studios Home Entertainment is celebrating the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of Despicable Me with a series of sweepstakes and points rewards that will run through January. The animated movie, which grossed more than $500 million worldwide, will be on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on Dec. 14.

Collecting Despicable Me‘s little yellow Minions are the goal for the promotional games. For each activity completed, players build their own army of Minions, and the more Minions fans have, the more chances to win.

Prizes will be rewarded weekly and monthly and increase in value as participants’ Minion armies grow.

Gift cards in $10, $20, $35 and $50 amounts will be awarded to winning players, as well as three grand prizes:

  • lifetime all-access passes to Universal Studios theme parks
  • a family trip to New York City for the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
  • and a family trip to Los Angeles, including hotel stays and spa visits.

Participants also can play using iPhones and an Augmented Reality app for a Minion Photo Madness event. Players can grow their Minion armies by photographing designated landmarks around the country and personalizing the photos with characters and props inspired by Despicable Me.

Holiday shoppers also can submit photos taken at minion photo displays in the Santa Photo areas at more than 170 Simon Shopping Malls through Dec. 24. And photo opportunities will be at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, where the minions and actress Miranda Cosgrove (TV’s iCarly and the voice of Margo in Despicable Me) will be featured in a float.
