A leg lamp, a pink bunny suit and a Red Ryder BB gun. What do you want for Christmas? We’d be happy with A Christmas Story, No. 3 in Disc Dish‘s list of the 25 best Christmas movies.
The 1983 comedy is a Christmas must-see along with National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Set in the 1940s, A Christmas Story stars Peter Billingsley (Iron Man) as young Ralphie Parker, who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, but his parents, teachers and even Santa Claus think it’s too dangerous. So Ralphie does his best to convince them otherwise. Melinda Dillon (Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and Darren McGavin (Billy Madison) play his parents.
The movie has some priceless moments, such as the tongue freezing to the pole incident. Ouch! Oh, and there’s that leg lamp Ralphie’s dad likes so much. Hmmm!
The comedy grossed $16.7 million when it was originally released in theaters, but it has become a holiday staple on video, even released in collectible tins with cookie dough.
A Christmas Story is available on DVD, Blu-ray and even the now-defunct HD DVD if you have a player. The movie also is available for download rental or purchase.
