New Release: Bhutto DVD

Bhutto movie scene

A new documentary examines the life and career of Pakistani political figure Benazir Bhutto.

First Run Features released the documentary Bhutto on DVD on May 17, 2011.

The 2010 documentary on the life and career of the late Benazir Bhutto, a polarizing political figure in the Muslim world who was assassinated in 2007, carries a list price of $27.95.

A Pakistani-born politician of Pakistani and Kurdish origin, Bhutto was the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state, having twice been Prime Minister of Pakistan (1988-1990 and then 1993-1996).

Bhutto was removed from her Prime Minister post both times on the grounds of alleged corruption and went into self-imposed exile in Dubai in 1998, returning to Pakistan in 2007 after reaching an understanding with President Prevez Musharraf, who granted her amnesty and had all corruption charges withdrawn. Campaigning for a leadership position in December 2007 as the chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Bhutto was assassinated by a gunman as she stood up through the sunroof of her bulletproof vehicle and waved to the surrounding crowds.

Directed by Duane Baughman and Johnny O’Hara, Bhutto was released in theaters on a limited basis following its Stateside premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2010.

No bonus features are on the DVD.
