New Release: The Taqwacores DVD

The Taqwacores move scene

Get ready for Muslim punk rock in The Taqwacores.

The Taqwacores, the high-energy independent drama about Muslim punk rockers in upstate New York, arrived on DVD on April 5, 2011, courtesy of Strand Releasing. The film created some significant buzz at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

The movie follows Yusef (Bobby Naderi, AmerAisan), a first-generation Pakistani-American engineering student who moves off-campus with a group of Muslim punk rockers in Buffalo, New York. His new housemates soon introduce him to “Taqwacore” – a hardcore, Muslim punk rock scene.

s the seasons change, Taqwacore influences the house more and more. The living room becomes a mosque during the day, while it continues to host punk shows at night. Ultimately (and not surprisingly), Yusef begins to challenge his own faith and ideologies.

Directed by Eyad Zahra and co-starring Noureen Dewulf (TV’s Outsourced), Dominic Rains, Nav Mann and Anne Leighton, The Taqwacores received a limited theatrical release onto a couple of screens last fall.

The DVD, which carries the list price of $24.99, contains a making-off featurette.
