New Release: Rubber Blu-ray and DVD

Rubber movie scene

A new kind of terror rolls down the road in Rubber.

Rubber, the first killer tire movie we have ever encountered, arrived on Blu-ray and DVD on June 7, 2011, from Magnet Video.

The comedy horror film turns on Robert, a seemingly run-of-the-mill tire that comes to life and discovers that he has telepathic powers that enable him to decimate whatever he wants a la David Cronenberg’s Scanners. Wreaking havoc on lost items and small desert creatures for a time, Robert rolls on down the road and quickly moves up to humans. Prompting many a mortal head to explode as he sets out on a killing spree across the winding desert highways, Robert must be stopped!

Written and directed by French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux and starring Stephen Spinella (Milk), Roxane Mesquida (Fat Girl) and Wings Hauser (Vice Squad), Rubber received its first exposure at a slew of film festivals in 2010, including Cannes. It received mixed reviews (IndieWire called it “one of the more bizarre experiments with genre in quite some time”) and premiered in the U.S. as a video-on-demand title in February 2011.

The Bu-ray and DVD carry list prices of $29.98 and $26.98.

Here’s a list of the special features that will be on the discs:

  • interviews with writer/director Quentin Dupieux and actors Stephen Spinella, Jack Plotnick and Roxane Mesquida
  • First camera tests in Corsica 2010
  • HDNet: A Look at Rubber
