Cowboys & Aliens movie scene

Daniel Craig radiates as he gets ready to draw in Cowboys & Aliens.

A science-fiction-western film mash-up, Cowboys & Aliens mashes together two time-honored movie genre types — science-fiction flicks and westerns — and unleashes them in a big-budget, all-star Hollywood movie.

Set in Arizona in 1873, the film kicks off with the awakening of Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig, Casino Royale), an apparent outlaw who happens to be stricken with amnesia. He’s wanted for theft by Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford, Morning Glory), a well-to-do but aging small-town bad-ass, but before Dolarhyde can make his collar, a group of alien spaceships rip apart the town and abduct a number of the locals. Can the strange metal band that has been fused onto Jake’s wrist during his pre-awakening blackout have anything to do with the attack? Stay tuned…

Based on the graphic novel by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, the movie is directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man 2) and co-stars Paul Dano (The Extra Man), Sam Rockwell (Conviction) and Olivia Wilde (The Change-Up) as a mysterious local gal.

Cowboys & Aliens proved to be one of 2011’s liveliest summer movies. But though it was filled with cool-looking spaceships, manly cowboys and lots of action, the movie didn’t shoot through the roof in terms of ticket sales. Opening wide in U.S. theaters in late July 2011, the film grossed just under $100 million at the domestic box office.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo of Cowboys & Aliens offers both the PG-13-rated theatrical version of the film as well as an unrated version, which clocks in at 135 minutes (15 minutes longer that the theatrical version).

The single-DVD edition of the film (which contains the theatrical version) includes the following bonus features:

  • “Finding the Story”
  • “The Scope of the Spectacle”
  • feature commentary with director Jon Favreau

The Blu-ray/DVD combo (which includes a digital copy of the theatrical feature) offers all the above bonus features as well as the following:

  • digital copy of the Cowboys & Aliens theatrical version (expires May 27, 2012)
  • Second Screen
  • “Conversations with Jon Favreau”
  • “Igniting the Sky: The Making of Cowboys & Aliens
  • My Scenes
  • U-Control Picture In Picture
  • Pocket Blu App
