News: HBO’s Boardwalk Empire: Best 2011 Swag

HBO's gorgeous box of swag for Boardwalk Empire

Though there are still seven weeks remaining in 2011, we’re gonna go out on a limb and say that the home entertainment industry’s best promotional swag of the year comes from HBO for its upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release of Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season, which streets on Jan. 10.

Arriving today via UPS, the swag is in a gorgeously customized nine-pound box. I was a bit curious as to why the special delivery package required an adult signature — until I read the label a bit closer and noted that the “Recipient must be at least 21 years of age” and that the handler was instructed “Do not deliver to an intoxicated person.”

Now we’re talking!

The riches found within the box are first class all the way: a glossy 16-page, full-color hardcover picture book depicting scenes from the series, a soundtrack CD, a two-disc DVD containing the show’s first episode and assorted press materials and—drumroll—a limited edition 2009 bottle of Boardwalk Empire North Coast Brut sparkling wine!

The baubles and booze certainly befit one of the most popular television shows in HBO’s history, a dramatic period series that re-creates the glitter and decadence of 1920s Atlantic City when Prohibition was the law of the land and operators like A.C. treasurer Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi, The Big Lebowski) used their power to take full advantage of the possibilities.

Kudos to the publicity team at HBO for letting the champagne flow in anticipation of what’s sure to be a glorious beginning to the new year!

Coming in second place in the swag-off is the plush that Anchor Bay sent to hype Roger Corman’s hybrid-monster movie opus Sharktopus.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, me and my plush are getting a little thirsty….
