Bucky Larson: Born To Be a StarBucky Larson: Born To Be a Star is another in those comedy movies about overly optimistic people who are completely ignorant about how stupid they are, in the vein Will Ferrell’s Ricky Bobby: Talladega Nights and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. But where Ferrell’s films worked, Bucky Larson didn’t make many friends in theaters.

Comedian Nick Swardson (Just Go With It) stars in the film as a buck-toothed grocery bagger from the Midwest who’s going nowhere in life. After he finds out his parents were once porn stars, he moves to Hollywood to follow in his their footsteps, but he has to overcome certain shortcomings.

The cast also includes Christina Ricci (TV’s Pan Am), Don Johnson (Machete), Stephen Dorff (Carjacked), Kevin Nealon (TV’s Weeds) and Pauly Shore (Son in Law).

Swardson also co-wrote Bucky Larson, along with Allen Covert (Grandma’s Boy) and king of comedy Adam Sandler (Grown-Ups). And the 97-minute film was directed by Tom Brady, who also helmed comedies The Hot Chick and The Comebacks.

Despite the R-rated movie’s comedy cache, Bucky Larson was uniformly panned by critics. New York Daily News‘ Joe Neumaier said it’s a “god-awful, unfunny, stinkingly putrid sketch comic movie.” Austin Chronicle‘s Kimberley Jones said, “Nothing to see here, kids.” And New York Times critic A.O. Scott said, “This may be the worst movie Pauly Shore has ever been in. Think about that.” Ouch, indeed!

Still, Bucky Larson managed to gross $2.3 million in the box office, so maybe it’ll have some fans who’ll want to own the DVD or Blu-ray.

Sony has packed in some more value to the discs. The DVD and Blu-ray include four featurettes:

  • “Laughter is Contagious”
  • “Behind the Teeth”
  • “Gary: Tough Customer”
  • and “Bucky Sparkles.”
