There Be DragonsWes Bentley (American Beauty) and Dougray Scott (The Diplomat) star in the 2011 film There Be Dragons, which is based on the true story about the lift of saint Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of controversial Catholic institution Opus Dei.

Written and directed by Roland Joffe (The Killing Fields), the biography movie follows investigative journalist Robert Torres (Scott), who’s researching a book about Escrivá (Charlie Cox, Moby Dick). His work gets derailed when his father Manolo (Bentley), his most promising source, turns uncooperative.

Robert discovers that Manolo was a childhood friend with Escrivá, and they attended the same seminary. However, the two men took different paths in life, with Escrivá dedicating his life to his faith and Manolo getting involved in the brutal Spanish Civil War. The more Robert investigates, the more he finds out the lives of the two men overlapped.

There Be Dragons Blu-ray boxRated PG-13, There Be Dragons also stars Derek Jacobi (The King’s Speech), Rodrigo Santoro (I Love You Phillip Morris) and Olga Kurylenko (Centurion).

The Blu-ray and DVD include just two special features:

  • a set of deleted scenes
  • and the featurette “Facing Your Dragons: Inspiring Testimony From Wes Bently.”

The drama film was released in a limited number of theaters and audiences that saw it generally approved, scoring the movie at 72%, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics, however, hated the film. The New York Times‘ Stephen Holden said, “Clunk, clunk, squish. That is the sound of the dead language in Roland Joffe’s screenplay for There Be Dragons.” New York Post‘s Lou Lumenick called There Be Dragons an “international muddle of a movie.”

You be the judge.
