Americano movie scene

Her name was Lola, she was a stripper: Salma Hayek stars in Americano.

Salma Hayek (Savages) stars as a stripper who helps a man uncover secrets about his late mother in the 2011 drama film Americano, directed and written by and starring Mathieu Demy (The Girl on the Train).

After receiving news of his mother’s death, Martin (Demy) leaves his girlfriend (Chiara Mastroianni, Park Benches) and home in Paris and sets off for his childhood home in Los Angeles to tie up the loose ends of his rocky maternal relationship. Arriving in the U.S., Martin digs into his mother’s past and discovers she had a hidden relationship with a beautiful woman named Lola (Hayek), who he finds at a seedy strip club in Tijuana called “The Americano.” While Lola recounts her affair with his mother, Martin realizes there is more than he ever hoped to know about his mother’s sordid past and his own problems with commitment.

The directorial debut of Demy, who is the son of the great directors Agnes Varda and Jacques Demy, Americano serves as a tribute to his filmmaking parents. Notably, the movie incorporates scenes from Varda’s 1981 Documenteur, which features a grade-school-aged Mathieu Demy.

Fans of the elder Demy will note that “Lola” is the title of Jacques Demy’s first film, which starred Anouk Aimée as the titular cabaret dancer. Aimée also popped up as the same character in 1968’s Model Shop, Jacques Demy’s only film made in the U.S.

Following its screenings at several major film festivals, including those in Toronto, Rio de Janeiro and London, Americano enjoyed a limited run in U.S. theaters in June, 2012, where it received only so-so notices from the critics. (It rated a 5.5/10 at Rotten Tomatoes based on 14 reviews.)

No bonus features are on the DVD and Blu-ray.
