Movie 43 might have the distinction of featuring the most movie stars in a film that’s not a documentary about Hollywood.
The comedy stars Hugh Jackman (Real Steel), Justin Long (Going the Distance), Dennis Quaid (The Words), Greg Kinnear (The Kennedys), Emma Stone (Gangster Squad), Kate Winslet (Contagion), Liev Schreiber (Salt), Naomi Watts (Fair Game), Anna Faris (What’s Your Number?), Gerard Butler (Playing For Keeps), Halle Berry (Cloud Atlas), Terrence Howard (The Ledge), Elizabeth Banks (The Next Three Days), Richard Gere (Arbitrage), Kate Bosworth (Straw Dogs), Kristen Bell (Big Miracle), Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses), Josh Duhamel (Life As We Know It), Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction) … Phew!
Rated R, Movie 43 tells a series of interconnected stories about a washed-up producer pitching insane story ideas all over Hollywood. Bob Odenkirk (TV’s Breaking Bad) took overall directing duties, but segments here helmed by others, including Banks, Peter Farrelly (The Three Stooges) and Brett Ratner (Tower Heist).
But all those big names didn’t help the film build an audience. Movie 43 grossed only $9 million in wide release at theaters.
Its dismal reviews could have been to blame. According to Rotten Tomatoes, critics’ approval for the film was only 4%. Ouch! Moviegoers liked it better, but only 31%. As Chicago Reader critic Ben Sachs wrote: “Despite all the gross-out humor, the most offensive thing about this is the lazy filmmaking; every shot feels like a first take, and the haphazard editing precludes any comic timing.”
The Blu-ray contains just one special feature: “Find Our Daughter.”
Here’s the film’s trailer, with lots of offensive stuff:
