Jennifer Jones and William Holden confirm that Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing

One of Hollywood’s classic epic romances, 1955’s Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing stars William Holden (Sunset Boulevard) and Jennifer Jones (Beat the Devil).

Based on the bestselling autobiographical novel by Han Suyin, the movie’s story concerns a reserved Eurasian doctor (Jones) working in the exotic, conflict-ridden Hong Kong of the post-World War II era. There, she meets a dashing but married war correspondent (Holden), and the two embark on a whirlwind romance buffeted by problems of race, politics, and war.

Directed by Henry King and featuring superb cinematography by Leon Shamroy (Leave Her to Heaven) and equally gorgeous location footage shot by Charles Clarke, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing co-stars Torin Thatcher, Isobel Elsom, Virginia Gregg and Richard Loo.

The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three of them: Best Costume Design (Charles Le Maire), Best Original Song (the title number by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster) and Best Score (Alfred Newman).
