PlanesYes, Disney’s Planes is like Cars in the sky.

The animated movie was originally planned to debut on DVD and Blu-ray, but flew to theaters first instead.

Planes tells the story a crop duster, appropriately named Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook, Answers to Nothing), who dreams of flying in the greatest air race ever. However, he has two problems: He’s not built for speed and he’s afraid of heights. It’s his friends to the rescue as Dusty finds his courage.

The PG-rated family film’s voice cast also includes Stacy Keach (End of the Road), Brad Garrett (The Incredible Burt Wonderstone), Teri Hatcher (Coraline), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (TV’s Veep), John Cleese (Winnie the Pooh), Cedric the Entertainer (Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted), Anthony Edwards (Flipped) and Val Kilmer (Twixt).

Planes grossed $86.8 million in theaters. It’s a good take, but much less than Cars‘ $244 million or Cars 2‘s $191 million.

The reviews might not have helped, with Planes getting only 26% approval by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, although moviegoers liked it more with 53%.

  • “Klay’s Flight Plan” about director Klay Hall’s journey during the making of Planes and his family connection to aviation, including Klay landing on an aircraft carrier to get first-hand experience on the flight deck
  • four “Meet the Racers” featurettes with El Chupacabra, Ripslinger, Dusty and Ishani.

The Blu-ray and select digital retailers also have these:

  • “Exclusive Franz’s Song” with the newly released finished animated song with the German mini-car Franz Fliegenhosen
  • two deleted scenes with introductions by director Klay Hall and producer Traci Balthazor-Flynn
  • and “Top 10 Flyers” with ESPN’s Colin Cowherd hosting a countdown of the greatest aviators in history.
