There’s a lot of backstage lore revolving around the 1982 comedy-drama Jinxed starring Bette Midler (The Rose) and Ken Wahl (The Wanderers) and directed by Don Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) from a screenplay by Frank D. Gilroy and David Newman.
For starter, veteran filmmaker suffered a heart attack during the course of production. The film would turn out to be Siegel’s last.
In addition to Siegel’s health problems, Midler and Wahl reportedly fought viciously throughout the filming, making no secret of their open hostility towards one another. Wahl described to the press how much he disliked kissing Midler. Years later, Midler would state that Siegel was also hostile towards her. In turn, Siegel said the experience of working with Midler was unpleasant.
We spoke to the film’s cinematographer, Vilmos Zsgmond, about the film, if you want to check out what he had to say, you can read it here .
Oh, if you’re wondering, the movie is about a high-rolling gambler Harold Benson (Rip Torn, Men in Black) who’s on a winning streak thanks to “jinxed” blackjack dealer Willie Brodax (Wahl)—Harold just can’t loose when he’s playing at Willie’s table. The only way for Willie to break his streak of bad luck is to take something prized from Harold. Enter Harold’s mistress, lounge singer Bonita Friml (Midler)…
