In 1863, despite overwhelming odds, defiant Southern farmer Newt Knight (McConaughey) and his extraordinary armed rebellion banded together with other small farmers and local slaves and launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a “Free State of Jones.”

Directed and co-written by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), Free State of Jones also stars Keri Russell (TV’s The Americans) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Larry Crowne).

The film received rather tepid reviews from the critics, garnering a mild 46% rating at aggregator Rotten Tomatoes based upon 130 published reviews. It fared equally poor at the domestic box office, ringing up only $21 million upon its wide theatrical release in June, 2016.

The Free State of Jones Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD editions include a featurette that looks into the history of Jones County, once a battlefield covered by plantations and plagued with class struggle.
