The debut film by Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante, Ixcanul is a fusion of fact and fable, a dreamlike depiction of the daily lives of Kaqchikel speaking Mayan on a coffee plantation at the base of an active volcano. Ixcanul translates in “volcano” in Engish.

The film immerses audiences its characters’ customs and beliefs, chronicling with a high-sense of realism, the disappearance of traditions of a disappearing people.

The film generated a staggering 100% positive rating at aggregator Rotten Tomatoes based upon 28 published reviews.
