A boy meets a monster who helps him face the future in the visually spectacular emotion-filled drama A Monster Calls.

In the movie, 12-year-old Conor O’Malley (Lewis MacDougall, Pan) yearns for guidance after his beloved mother (Felicity Jones, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) becomes ill and he moves in with his less-than-sympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver, Avatar). He unexpectedly summons a 40-foot-high colossus of a creature, the Monster (voiced and performed by Taken‘s Liam Neeson), who becomes a most unlikely ally by guiding him on a journey of courage, faith, and truth that powerfully fuses imagination and reality.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker J.A. Bayona (The Impossible) and based on the award-winning novel by Patrick Ness (who also wrote the screenplay adaptation), the drama/fantasy slayed the critics, earning an 87% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes based upon 219 published reviews. That wasn’t reflected at the domestic box office, unfortunately, where the film rang up a disastrous $3.7 million upon its wide release in January, 2017.

Bonus features on the Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD include the following:

  • Deleted Scenes
  • The Making of A Monster Calls – Filmmakers, cast, and crew discuss their creative collaboration and how vital it was to tell this story with truths.
  • Making of the Tales – Animation and visual effects take us through creating the Monster’s tales.
