One of Barbet Schroeder’s (Reversal of Fortune, Barfly) latest film, the 2015 drama Amnesia, is set in beautiful Ibiza.

Marthe Keller and Max Riemelt in Barbet Schroeder’s Amnesia

Set in the early 1990s, it tells the story about a German expat living in Ibiza who befriends a young aspiring composer from Berlin. Martha (Marthe Keller, Fedora) has been living alone in her house facing the sea for forty years. One night Jo (Max Riemelt, TV’s Sense8), an aspiring DJ, knocks on her door and her solitude intrigues him. The two become friends even as the mysteries around her Martha accumulate: a cello in the corner she refuses to play, the German language she refuses to speak… As Jo draws her into the new world of techno music, Martha puts everything she had previously lived by into question.

Also featuring Bruno Ganz (The American Friend), the DVD of Amnesia includes an interview with Schroeder and the Anna Maguire’s 2016 short film Your Mother and I, starring Julia Sarah Stone and Don McKellar (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) as a skeptical daughter and her impressively loquacious father in an adaptation of a Dave Eggers story.
