The 1973 made-for-television docu-drama Sunshine, a true story, is based on the journals of a young wife and mother diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The film stars Cristina Raines (Nashville) as young pregnant divorcee Kate Hayden and Cliff DeYoung (Wild) as struggling musician Sam Hayden. The two fall in love and get married, with Kate giving birth to a daughter named Jill several month into their relationship.  But short after Jill is born, Kate is diagnosed with a form of bone cancer. Kate initially undergoes chemotherapy and then decides to forego treatment and focus on being a wife and mother…

When first aired in November, 1973, Sunshine was the most watched made-for-TV movie in history.

Directed by Joseph Sargent (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three), it features a memorable soundtrack highlight by the John Denver standard “Sunshine on My Shoulders.”
