The war drama Jirga takes a look at the impact of war on both sides, specifically at the war in Afghanistan, where armies from all over the world have fought for the United States.

In this case, a former Australian soldier returns to a village where he was involved in war crimes. Seeking relief from his torment, he puts his life in the hands of the village justice system – the “Jirga.”

Written and directed by Benjamin Gilmour, Jirga was shot in Afghanistan after the Pakistani Secret Service cancelled permission to film. The filmmaker ended up taking his star, actor Sam Smith, to Taliban-controlled regions of Afghanistan, using some a number of natural non-actors, a few being former members of the Taliban itself.

Australia’s pick for best Foreign Language Film for the 2019 Oscars, Jirga was the winner of the Best Independent Film Sward from the Australian Academy (AACTA).
