The story World War II’s Siege of Leningrad is told through the lives of people caught in the middle of it in the 2019 Russian production Battle of Leningrad.

September 1941. On the Eastern Front of World War II, Kostya (Andrey Mironov-Udalov) and his fellow Russian cadets are tasked with evacuating thousands of civilians out of war-torn Leningrad, to safety aboard Barge 752. While Kostya’s commander initially worries that the barge may be too outdated to safely sail across Lake Ladoga, the evacuation is completed, even allowing Kostya time to smuggle his fiancé, Nastya (Maria Melnikova), aboard the barge to join him on the journey. But catastrophe quickly finds them.

Written and directed by Aleksey Kozlov, Battle is an epic film about Nazi Germany’s infamous 28-month blockade of the Soviet city for 28 months, but it’s also one that focuses intimately on the unique individuals caught up in an immense battle and tragedy.
