A seventeen-year-old named Franz journeys to Vienna to apprentice at a tobacco shop in the 2018 German historical drama The Tobacconist, based on the international bestseller by Robert Seethaler and directed and co-written by Nikolaus Leytner.

When in Vienna, Franz (Simon Morzé) meets Sigmund Freud (the great Bruno Ganz of The American Friend fame), a regular customer, and over time the two very different men form a singular friendship. When Franz falls desperately in love with the music-hall dancer Anezka (Emma Drogunova), he seeks advice from the renowned psychoanalyst, who admits that the female sex is as big a mystery to him as it is to Franz. But then political and social conditions in Austria begin to dramatically worsen with the Nazis’ arrival in Vienna…
