RATINGS (out of 5): Movie | Audio | Video | Overall

Give Em Hell Malone movie scene with Thomas JaneThomas Jane, the star of HBO’s comedy TV show Hung, is equally manly in this independent film as Malone, a fedora-wearing private detective with an old-fashioned approach to his profession, one that includes talking tough, hitting hard and using a gun whenever the opportunity arises.

At least, that’s what happens when he’s hired to retrieve a missing briefcase and subsequently gets into a bone-crunching fight before the opening credits have even rolled.

Dripping with saturated colors, Give ‘Em Hell Malone dishes up stylishly nasty violence and scenery-chewing but fun performances by Jane and co-stars Ving Rhames, Doug Hutchison and beautiful Elsa Pataky as the inevitable woman in red.

The movie was directed by Russell Mulcahy, who’s no stranger to densely visual, over-the-top films, as can be witnessed in his Highlander, Ricochet and Resident Evil: Extinction.

Overall, Malone is a reasonably fun ride that owes as much to Frank Miller/Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City as it does to the film noirs of yesteryear.

The DVD special features are slim, just some cast interviews.
