RATINGS (out of 5): Movie | Audio | Video | Overall

An enthusiastic cast and lively pace elevate this romantic comedy several notches above the other movies in this genre that slipped into theaters in 2009 and 2010. (Yes, we’re talking about you The Back-up Plan and Valentine’s Day.) And, in some cases, She’s Out of My League is waaay better (Leap Year and The Bounty Hunter, anyone?).

The film stars Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder) as a sweet but insecure underachiever working as a TSA screener at Pittsburgh International Airport. He’s introduced to ridiculously hot and curvy event planner Alice Eve ( Sex and The City 2) when he finds and returns her lost iPhone. To the shock of both his friends (Gulliver Travels T.J. Miller, Cloverfield’s Mike Vogel and Get Smart‘s Nate Torrence) and hers (Confessions of a Shopaholic’s Krysten Ritter), the dweeb and the dish get romantically involved, even though everyone thinks that she’s out of — oh, you get it!

The movie has a bunch of funny set pieces (including a genuinely clever family luncheon sequence), some of which unfortunately descend into some silly gross-out moments, but everyone appears to be having a good time, particularly the wise-cracking Ritter and two leads (Ms. Eve is at least as appealing as Madames Heigl and Aniston), who bring some comedic and romantic chemistry to the screen. The genre is beginning to wane, yes, but She’s Out of Your League isn’t as insultingly pedestrian and stale as other recent romantic comedies, even if it does climax with a by-the-numbers madcap chase to the airport.

The supplements on the DVD are copious but relatively unspectacular, the stand-out being “Devon’s Dating Show,” a cute “do’s & don’ts” guide to dating hosted by Torrence, who portrays Baruchel’s most likable buddy in the film.
