Romantic comedy lovers won’t go wrong with 20th Century Fox’s Just Wright. The movie is served up with some smoothness thanks to the appeal of its leading lady, Queen Latifah (Chicago) and her capable co-stars Common (Date Night) and Paula Patton (Mirrors).

It’s almost impossible not to love Latifah, here playing Leslie Wright, a successful physical therapist who constantly finds herself in the friends zone with men. This is not the case with her gorgeous BFF Morgan (Patton), who is intent on becoming an NBA trophy wife.

Enter Scott McKnight (Common), a star NBA basketball player for the Nets, who Leslie meets cute in a gas station one night and scores herself an invite to a party at his house. Despite Leslie and Scott’s obvious rapport, he falls hard and fast for Morgan — who promptly dumps him when he becomes injured. Leslie comes to his rescue both as a therapist and a friend, and romance ensues, which includes most of the obligatory dictates set forth by the modern rom-com template (i.e. second thoughts, problems at the workplace, a madcap race across town, and so on).

Just Wright‘s authentic New Jersey and New York City locales are well-utilized, the frequent basketball scenes are lively and the cast is a pleasure to watch, particularly Pam Grier and James Pickens Jr. as Latifah’s parents.

And for her part, the Queen is funny, assured and, well, just right at all the right moments. Her fans are sure to like this one, as will those looking for an undemanding romantic comedy for the evening.

The DVD has more entertainment in the special features, with a gag reel and brief featurettes, but get the Blu-ray if you want even more extras.
