Toy Story 3 movie sceneDigitally animated movies make the best-looking high-definition releases, and Toy Story 3 is no exception. Especially awesome is new plush toy Lotso. You can see every piece of his fur; same with Barbie’s blond hair. And every swirl carved into the plastic nose of the green Rex is noticeable.

As usual, Blu-ray also heightens the colors, and with the rainbow of colors in Toy Story 3, there’s lots to enjoy. Woody’s yellow shirt and red neck scarf are as bright as ever, not to mention Jessie’s red hat, as well as all the colors of the horde of new toys.

The movie itself was called the best in the franchise in reviews received during its theatrical run, and we have to agree. The story is darker than the first two films. It’s bad enough when kids are being nasty to toys, but when toys turn evil, well, what has the world come to? With the darker story, of course, the more creative the toys have to be to make everything right and the sweeter the happy ending.

Like all its major releases, Disney has packed the Blu-ray with special features. Both of the available Blu-ray versions have two discs, with the movie and the fun animated short film Day & Night on one disc and a packed toy box’s worth of extras on the other.

Disney separated its special features into family play, film fans and games and activities.

Among the highlights are:

  • Tom Hanks (You’ve Got Mail) doing a nose sigh in the featurette “The Gang’s All Here,” going behind the scenes with the voice cast
  • animated writing lesson in “Beginnings: Setting a Story in Motion”
  • and the Cine-Explore commentary with director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla Anderson, which puts storyboards, artwork and other graphics on the screen while the movie plays.

Plus, all members of the family can enjoy the “Toy Story Trivia Dash,” with one player racing Woody and the other racing Buzz Lightyear. Each player answers questions about the Toy Story series or Toy Story 3 itself, with correct answers chosen before time runs out moving Woody and Buzz toward the finish line. Beware, you’ve got to know the Toy Story movies well to win.

All in all, Disney has delivered another stellar disc.
