Ok, so let’s be honest here: Grown Ups is not a brilliant movie. It’s basically a series of comedy one-liners from comedian stars Adam Sandler (Click), Chris Rock (Death at a Funeral), Kevin James (Hitch), David Spade (TV’s Rules of Engagement), Rob Schneider (Bedtime Stories) and Maya Rudpolph (TV’s Saturday Night Live) with a loose story line connecting them. Still, if you’re looking for laughs and you like the schtick these guys — and gal — put out, you can’t go wrong with this film.
The story does have some heart. In the movie, Sandler, Rock, James, Spade and Schneider, who played basketball together in a championship game when they were kids, reunite at their former coach’s funeral and then for the weekend with their families at a cabin by a lake. Now as grown ups, each has issues with his life and family, which are explored then solved during the course of the weekend.
The jokes are broad and not in the least subtle — what do you expect from Sandler, et al? — such as Spade falling face first into a pile of poop, Schneider getting an arrow through his foot and James falling down the side of a cliff.
Salma Hayek (Desperado) and Maria Bello (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee) also star as the wives of Sandler and James, respectively.
On DVD, the laughs are just as big, with Sony carring them through to the special features. The disc offers a funny gag reel and the “Laughing is Contagious” blooper reel, showing the actors having a grand old time during filming.
The final special feature, the featurette “The Cast of Grown Ups,” is your standard interview piece, but with these comedy stars, jokes are thrown into that too.
The Blu-ray versions offer more special features, in the form of a commentary with director Dennis Dugan, featurettes and a “Riff-O-Rama,” but we’re guessing they’re similar in theme to the extras on the DVD.
