New Release: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole movie sceneFilmmaker Zack Snyder’s (Sucker Punch) first foray in animated films, Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole arrived on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on Dec. 17, 2010, from Warner Home Video. It’s the same day Warner issued heist movie The Town; something for kids and something for mom and dad.

Snyder, the innovative director behind live-action movies Watchmen and 300, makes his animation debut with this fantasy adventure based on the books by Kathryn Lasky. In the film, young owl Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess of Across the Universe) marvels at his father’s stories about the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, mythic warriors who fought to save all owls from the evil Pure Ones. When Soren and his brother (Ryan Kwanten of TV’s True Blood) fall into the talons of the Pure Ones, Soren must find a way to escape and seek the Great Tree, the home of the Guardians and the only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdom. The voice cast of Legend of the Guardians also includes Anthony LaPaglia (TV’s Without a Trace), Helen Mirren (The Last Station) and Sam Neill (Daybreakers).

The PG-rated movie grossed $50 million during its run in theaters, lower than many animated films — and much less than Snyder’s live-action movies.

The DVD was priced at $28.98. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, including a downloadable digital copy of the film, was priced at $35.99.

The Blu-ray includes these special features:

  • featurette “True Guardians of the Earth”
  • Looney Tunes short “Fur of Flying”
  • WB Maximum “Kid” Mode: “Explore the World of Ga’Hoole”
  • four artwork galleries on the Guardians, locations, villains and Soren and friends
  • Owl City music video for “To the Sky”
  • and three interactive challenges:
    • “Armor Up With Soren & Eglantine”
    • “Match the Owl Treats”
    • and “Rise of the Guardians.”

The Blu-ray 3D version, priced at $44.95, offers the movie in 2D and 3D plus a downloadable digital copy and all the special features from the Blu-ray. However, the Looney Tunes short “Fur of Flying” is in 3D.
