New Release: Animal Kingdom DVD and Blu-ray

Animal Kingdom movie sceneNot to be confused with the old nature TV series, acclaimed crime drama Animal Kingdom was released on DVD and Blu-ray on Jan. 18, 2011, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Starring Guy Pearce (Memento), Joel Edgerton (Star Wars: Episode II) and Luke Ford (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), the movie follows the Cody family of criminal gangs through 17-year-old Josh Cody (new comer James Frecheville), who moves in with his grandmother (Jacki Weaver of TV’s Homicide) and gang uncles after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. When tensions build between the Codys and a squad of renegade cops land Josh in the middle of a murder plot, he must choose between his treacherous family and the lawless police.

The R-rated Australian film was nominated for a record-breaking 18 2010 Australian Film Institute Awards and won the 2010 Sundance Film Festival Award for World Cinema (Dramatic).

The Animal Kingdom DVD, priced at $28.95, include sthese special features:

  • audio commentary with writer/director David Michod
  • making-of featurette
  • and Q&A with Michod and actors Weaver and Frecheville.

The Blu-ray ($34.95) contains the same, but the making-of featurette is an hour-long program on the creation of the movie.
