New Release: The Last Unicorn Blu-ray

The Last Unicorn movie sceneAnimated movie The Last Unicorn debuted in high-definition Blu-ray on Feb. 22, 2011, from Lionsgate.

The 1982 family fantasy film tells the story of a brave unicorn, who, with the help of a magician, fights an evil king obsessed with capturing unicorns. The movie features the voices of a host of well-known actors, including Jeff Bridges (Tron: Legacy), Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), Robert Klein (Two Weeks Notice), Angela Lansbury (Beauty and the Beast), Christopher Lee (Lord of the Rings franchise) and Mia Farrow (Rosemary’s Baby) as the unicorn.

Based on the novel by Hugo Award-winning author Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn also showcases the artistry of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli (Ponyo) and music by America. The film was directed by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, the team behind 1977’s animated The Hobbit and 1970 Christmas special Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, among others.

Priced at $19.98, the Blu-ray is a Bly-ray/DVD combo pack and includes special features from the previously released DVD of the film, plus these new extras:

  • commentary with Beagle and publisher Connor Cochran
  • a featurette
  • and an art contest gallery.
