New Release: Hatchet II Blu-ray and DVD

Hatchet II, the sequel to the 2006 old school horror film favorite Hatchet, arrived on Blu-ray and DVD in its original uncensored, unrated director’s cut on Feb. 1, 2011, from MPI Media’s Dark Sky Films label.

Written and directed by the original Hatchet‘s helmer, Adam Green (Frozen), Hatchet II picks up right where the first film left off, as Marybeth (Danielle Harris, Stake Land) escapes from the clutches of the deformed Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder, 2001 Maniacs), a deformed, hatchet-wielding madman stalking the swamps of New Orleans. After learning some unpleasant truths about her family’s connection to the Crowley clan, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and friends who were murdered by Crowley and exact her revenge against the killer.

Hatchet II made headlines during its limited release in theaters in October 2010 when it became the first unrated independent horror film to be exhibited by a major theater chain, AMC Theaters, in more than 25 years — only to be yanked from screens a few days later.

A spokesperson for AMC confirmed Hatchet II had been pulled from all of the company’s screens and issued the following written statement: “At AMC Theaters, we review all films in all of our theatres every week and then make our business decisions based on their performance.”

The film ultimately played on 60+ screens for a box-office gross of about $70,000.

Bonus features on the slasher film’s DVD and Blu-ray include the following:

  • making-of featurette
  • commentary with writer/director Green, cinematographer Will Barratt and makeup effects supervisor Robert Pendergraft
  • cast commentary with Green and actors Hodder and Tony Todd
  • “First Look: Hatchet II” featurette (Blu-ray exclusive)
  • and “Meet the FX Team” (Blu-ray exclusive)

The Blu-ray and DVD are priced at $34.98 and $27.98, respectively.
