New Release: Gnomeo & Juliet DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D

Gnomeo & JulietCall us sappy, but this is a movie we’re excited about on DVD and Blu-ray. Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet? Love it! Elton John? Love it! Those cute little guys with the red hats? LOVE ‘EM! The animated family film Gnomeo & Juliet was available on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on May 24, 2011, from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

The musical, which grossed $95.9 million in theaters, also has some great voice talent, including James McAvoy (The Last Station), Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria), Michael Caine (Inception), Maggie Smith (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Patrick Stewart (Hamlet), Jason Statham (The Mechanic) and even rocker Ozzy Osbourne and former wrestler Hulk Hogan. Awesome!

Featuring songs from Elton John, Gnomeo & Juliet pits the red hats against the blue hats, who live on opposite sides of the fence. As the families feud, red-hat-wearing Juliet (Blunt) and blue-hat Gnomeo (McAvoy) accidentally meet in a neighboring yard and, you guessed it, fall in love. Throw in some Shakespeare puns, a talkative pink flamingo and lawnmower races, and it’s a couple of hours of fun.

The DVD include these special features:

  • “Elton Builds a Garden”
  • “Frog Talk With Ashley Jensen”
  • and the music video for “Crocodile Rock” with Elton John and Nelly Furtado.

The Blu-ray, a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, and Blu-ray 3D also have:

  • two alternate endings with filmmaker introductions
  • deleted and alternate scenes with filmmaker introductions, including an alternate opening
  • “The Fawn of Darkness” with Ozzy Osbourne
  • and a downloadable digital copy of the movie.

The DVD was priced at $29.99, the Blu-ray/DVD combo at $39.99 and the three-disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD at $49.99.

Gnomeo & Juliet isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but we’re suckers for silly and fun movies like this and it’s on our to-buy list.
