New Release: Rango DVD and Blu-ray

RangoJohnny Depp’s skinny chameleon Rango arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on July 15, 2011, an usual Friday release. And Paramount Home Entertainment is delivering the animated movie packing an extended version as well as the film that screened in theaters.

The acclaimed family comedy is priced at $29.99 on DVD and $39.99 as a Blu-ray/DVD combo, and both include the two versions of the movie, theatrical and the extended with an alternate ending. Both also come with plenty of special features. Here’s the list:

On the DVD:

  • commentary on the extended version of the film by director Gore Verbinski, head of story James Ward Byrkit, production designer Mark “Crash” McCreery, animation director Hal Hickel and visual effects supervisor Tim Alexander
  • deleted scenes, including an alternate ending
  • featurette “Real Creatures of Dirt” with animal experts talking about the real creatures that inspired the characters in Rango

Rango Blu-ray boxOn the Blu-ray/DVD combo, everything on the DVD plus:

  • picture-in-picture storyboard reel of the theatrical version of the movie
  • featurette “A Field Trip to Dirt,” in which viewers can get an interactive tour of the fictional desert town in the film
  • two-part making-of documentary “Breaking the Rules: Making Animation History,” about how the animation was created
  • and a downloadable digital copy of the movie.

Rated PG, Rango scored well at the box office, grossing $230 million worldwide and getting good reviews from critics.

Depp (The Tourist) voices the titular character Rango, a chameleon who’s living as a family pet but dreams of being a fearless hero. He gets his chance when he inadvertantly becomes the sheriff of a lawless desert town called Dirt.

Talk about an all-star cast, here are some other actors who voice characters in the film: Isla Fisher (Confessions of a Shopaholic), Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), Alfred Molina (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), Bill Nighy (Wild Target), Timothy Olyphant (TV’s Justified), Ned Beatty (Toy Story 3) and Ray Winstone (Beowulf). And the movie is directed by Pirates of the Caribbean‘s Gore Verbinski.
