New Release: The Big Lebowski Blu-ray Book

The Big Lebowski movie scene

John Goodman (l.) and Jeff Bridges prepare to roll in The Big Lebowski.

An instant inductee into the pantheon of Great Stoner Films, 1998’s The Big Lebowski, written and directed by the Coen Brothers (A Serious Man) and starring Jeff Bridges (Tron: Legacy) as The Dude, made its Blu-ray debut as a Limited Edition release in collectible hardcover packaging on Aug. 16, 2011, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The renowned cult comedy carries a list price of $29.98.

As well as Bridges, the movie has a great cast list: Julianne Moore (Chloe), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Jack Goes Boating), Steve Buscemi (Saint John of Las Vegas), John Goodman (TV’s Treme), Sam Elliott (The Contender) and John Turturro (Margot at the Wedding).

A cult hit if ever there was one — the film has conventions around it — The Big Lebowski is an inimitable comedy about the coolest man in Los Angeles, a guy known as The Dude, and his embraceable lifestyle of pot-smoking, bowling and White Russians. But we don’t have to tell you that…

The Blu-ray edition includes the following exclusive features:

  • “Mark it Dude:” a very cool fan guide that offers an on-screen counter that keeps track of all the “Dudes,” “F-Bombs” and “Dude-isms” in the film.
  • “The Music of The Big Lebowski:” identifying all the songs in the film, with the ability to create a custom playlist.
  • “Worthy Adversaries: What’s My Line Trivia:” game that tests fans’ knowledge of the movie by finishing lines of dialog during the film.

Plus, the disc contains Universal’s usual Blu-ray apps, including the following:

  • U-Control that lets the viewer access bonus materials without leaving the movie
  • Pocket Blu, which allows smartphones and computers to work seamlessly with a network-connected Blu-ray player
  • UHear that allows viewers to skip back a few seconds if they missed dialog

Also included in the package is a digital copy of The Big Lebowski and a stash of bonus features that have appeared on earlier DVD incarnations of the film (primarily the 10th Anniversary DVD Edition that was released in 2008). Amongst those extras are a “Jeff Bridge Photos Book,” a look at the popular “Lebowski Fest” fan convention and featurettes that offer interviews with the cast and crew and examine the film’s production, legacy, locations and dream sequences.

This Blu-ray edition isn’t the movie’s high-definition debut. The Big Lebowski was released on the now-defunct HD DVD in 2007.
