The Tree of Life movie scene

The meaning of it all is pondered in The Tree of Life.

Legendary writer/director Terrence Malick’s (Days of Heaven) provocative and powerful epic drama The Tree of Life is an impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950s.

The PG-13-rated film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack (played as an adult by Fair Game‘s Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood and his deep love for his mother (Jessica Chastain, Jolene) to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt, Seven).

Through stunning cinematography and raw emotional power, Malick’s hymn to life offers the director’s take on the most haunting and personal human questions through a kaleidoscope of the intimate and the cosmic, from the raw emotions of a family in a small Texas town to the infinite edges of space and time. In other words, Malick bites off a helluva lot in this movie — from the moment of the Earth’s creation to an adolescent boy getting his first glimpse of a woman’s undergarments.

The Tree of Life, which won the 2011 Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, grossed nearly $13 million in its limited release in U.S. theaters, which began in June, 2011.

The Blu-ray Disc presentation of the film utilizes maximum bit rate encoding and 7.1 audio and a 2.0 stereo mix to bring Malick’s visually stunning work to blazing life.

As a bonus feature, the Blu-ray contains an exclusive 30-minute making-of documentary, “Exploring The Tree of Life,” which examines the film and Malick’s cinematic legacy via interviews with his collaborators and cast members as well as fellow filmmakers (and admirers!) Christopher Nolan (Inception) and David Fincher (The Social Network).

The Blu-ray/DVD also includes a downloadable digital copy of the movie. And there’s no separate DVD-only version of the film.
