Conan the Barbarian movie scene

Jason Momoa prepares to make a point in Conan the Barbarian.

A legendary sword-slashing fantasy hero — the one who was previously portrayed on film years ago by a future governor of California — returns in the action-adventure fantasy movie Conan the Barbarian.

Based on the brawny character as originally created by fantasy writer Robert E. Howard in 1932, Conan is a boy born on the battlefield who grows into a hulking warrior (played this time by Jason Momoa, TV’s Game of Thrones). He’s a troubled “hero” who’s hell-bent on avenging his father’s death at any cost. But Conan’s personal vendetta escalates into an epic battle of impossible odds as he faces the fiercest of rivals and the most horrific of monsters.

Directed by Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th), the movie also stars Rachel Nichols (Star Trek), Stephen Lang (Avatar), Rose McGowan (Grindhouse: Planet Terror) and Ron Perlman (TV’s Sons of Anarchy).

Conan the Barbarian Blu-rayFilled with sprawling action set pieces, CGI-summoned sorcery and limb-lopping carnage a’plenty, the $70 million-budgeted R-rated Conan opened wide in U.S. theaters in August 2011 but rang up a disappointing $21 million at the box office.

Oh, and that aforementioned West coast governor would be Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator) of Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984), which were both recently released on Blu-ray by Universal.

But you know that.

Bonus features on the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D editions of the 2011 Conan include the following:

  • two audio commentaries
  • a history of the Conan franchise featurette
  • “The Man Who Would Be Conan: Robert E. Howard” featurette
  • two featurettes focusing on the film’s action and fight sequences

Here’s an action-packed trailer to chew on:
