GCB Season 1Debuting on DVD a week after the season finale’s airing on TV, ABC’s hilarious primetime soap GCB is looking for a bigger audience.

Studios usually release TV shows on disc a few weeks before the new season premieres to get viewers primed to tune in. But with season one of GCB, as well as ABC’s Scandal, Missing and The River, Disney chose a DVD street date the week after the first season finale no doubt to gauge audience reaction and see if the shows are worth renewing.

GCB had been seen as a potential replacement to ABC’s long-running hit Desperate Housewives, which ends on television this year. But ratings haven’t been what the network hoped for.

The comedy is based on the novel Good Christian Bitches by Kim Gatlin, although ABC changed the name in case it was too offensive.

GCB Season 1 DVD boxThe series stars Leslie Bibb (Zookeeper) as Amanda Vaughn, a former high school mean girl whose husband died after crashing his car while his girlfriend was giving him some, umm, pleasure. Oh, and they were running away together with funds he stole from a Ponzi scheme.

Disgraced and with no money, Amanda moves herself and her two children back home to Dallas to live with her mom (the awesome Annie Potts of TV’s Designing Women, who we’re thrilled to see back on the air). But Amanda’s return isn’t particularly welcomed by the women she ridiculed in high school, including the equally awesome Kristin Chenoweth (You Again). Although Amanda has changed for the better, those she picked on have changed for the worse. As Disney’s press materials say, “Hell hath no fury like the cosmetically enhanced!”

All 10 episodes of the first season are in the three-DVD set, as well as deleted scenes, blooper reels and featurettes about favorite characters.
