Alex CrossTyler Perry (For Colored Girls) steps away from Medea and gets more serious in the thriller movie Alex Cross.

Based on James Patterson‘s novel Cross, the film follows the Detroit Police Department homicide detective/psychologist (Perry) as he takes on one of his toughest cases. Cross plays a cat and mouse game with a serial killer called Picasso (Matthew Fox, TV’s Lost). After Picasso makes the mission personal, Cross is pushed to the edge of his moral and psychological limits.

The character of Cross is, of course, the same one who was played by Morgan Freeman (Seven) in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.

Rated PG-13, Alex Cross also stars Giancarlo Esposito (TV’s Breaking Bad), Rachel Nichols (Conan the Barbarian), Jean Reno (Armored), Ed Burns (Edward Burns) and John C. McGinley (Platoon). The film was directed by Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious), from a script by Marc Moss (Along Came a Spider) and newcomer Kerry Williamson.

Alex Cross grossed $25 million in theaters after dismal reviews from critics — only 13% approval, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Entertainment Weekly‘s Lisa Schwarzbaum called the film is “so cloddish, slapdash, gracelessly written, and visually fugly that it’s difficult to distinguish Perry’s limitations in the role from those of the whole unpleasant enterprise.” Ouch!

Moviegoers liked it a little better, giving the film a 57% rating, but the reviews weren’t that much better than the roughly 35% approval Freeman’s movies got from critics.

Both the Blu-ray and DVD versions of Alex Cross have these special features:

  • audio commentary with Rob Cohen
  • deleted scenes
  • featurette “The Psychologist and the Butcher: Adapting and Filming Alex Cross
