Star Trek Into DarknessDirector J.J. Abrams’ (Super 8) second venture into Enterprise territory, Star Trek Into Darkness, is another homage to earlier entries in the science-fiction franchise.

Abrams’ rebooted series tackles Khan this time, with the brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch (TV’s Sherlock) playing the genius villain. Bringing the character forward, Abrams’ Khan is a terrorist, attacking Starfleet Command for what he deems are their sins. Chris Pine’s (People Like Us) Captain James T. Kirk must gather his team and go rogue to stop the menace.

Zachary Quinto (TV’s Heroes), Zoe Saldana (Colombiana), Karl Urban (And Soon the Darkness), Simon Pegg (Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol), John Cho (Total Recall), Anton Yelchin (Like Crazy) and Bruce Greenwood (Flight) all return to their roles from Abrams’ first film. And Peter Weller (Firstborn) and Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) join the cast.

PG-13-rated Star Trek Into the Darkness grossed $223 million in theaters, just shy of 2009’s Star Trek. But that follows with the reviews, with the original scoring 95% and Into the Darkness only 87% — not that 87% is anything to complain about.

The DVD is plain, with the just the feature, but the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D combo packs come stuffed with extras.

Abrams said of the home entertainment offerings: “I’m thrilled with how everything looks and sounds.  We also have some really fun behind-the-scenes special features that we shot on the Red and created entirely in-house at Bad Robot.  They really look amazing and unlike anything I’ve seen on DVD or Blu-ray before.” We’ll be the judge of that.

Here’s the list of the bonuses on the Blu-ray/DVD Combo and Blu-ray 3D Combo:

  • featurette “Creating the Red Planet”
  • featurette “Attack on Starfleet”
  • featurette “The Klingon Home World”
  • featurette “The Enemy of My Enemy,” about why the identity of the movie’s true villain was kept secret until the end
  • featurette “Ship to Ship,” about how they filmed the space jump sequence
  • featurette  “Brawl by the Bay,” with Quinto and Cumberbatch talking about how they prepared for the movie’s climax
  • featurette “Continuing the Mission,” about the partnership between the film’s crew and the organization that helps veterans return home and find meaningful ways to contribute
  • digital copy and instant streaming via UltraViolet.

A Star Trek Into the Darkness Starfleet Phaser Limited Edition Gift Set, with Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD and model phaser also is available.
