New Release: The American DVD and Blu-ray

The American movie scene with George ClooneyArt house drama The American, starring George Clooney (Up in the Air) as a hit man completing his last assignment, made its DVD and Blu-ray debut on Dec. 28, 2010, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

Based on the novel A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth, the movie follows Clooney as he hides out in a small village in the Italian countryside after doing a hit. When he gets involved with a local woman (Italian actress Violante Placido), he tries to quit, but he has one more job to complete and it could be his most dangerous yet.

The independent film, directed by Anton Corbijn (Control) who’s perhaps best known for his music documentaries of U2, Depeche Mode and Bryan Adams, grossed $35 million in theaters.

The American DVD boxBoth the DVD and Blu-ray include these special features:

  • deleted scenes
  • making-of featurette “Journey to Redemption: The Making of The American
  • and commentary by Corbijn.

The Blu-ray also has Universal’s usual interactive features:

  • BD-Live web access
  • Pocket Blu to allow smartphones to interact with the movie while its playing
  • My Scenes bookmarking
  • and UHear, which skips back a few seconds and turns on subtitles if you missed any words.

The American also was released on video-on-demand and for download the same day.
