HBO Home Entertainment released Treme: The Complete First Season on DVD
A drama set in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Treme interweaves stories of musicians and other city residents who are trying to rebuild their lives. The television series speaks to the enduring music and cultural traditions that make New Orleans’ citizens, and the city itself, so unique.
The episodes in Treme: The Complete First Season begins three months after Katrina. More than half the population of New Orleans is elsewhere and much of the city is wrecked, muddied and caked in mold, while other neighborhoods – in “the sliver by the river,” as locals call it – remain viable. But the tourists have yet to return, the money that follows them is scarce, and residents can take solace only in the fact that the city’s high levels of crime have migrated to Houston and Baton Rouge. For those returning, housing is hard to come by, with many people waiting for insurance checks that might never arrive.
The show was co-created and produced by David Simon, the Emmy-winning creator of HBO series The Wire and Eric Overmyer (Homicide: Life on the Street). Featured in the ensemble cast are Wendell Pierce (The Wire), Khandi Alexander (TV’s CSI: Miami), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Rob Brown (Stop-Loss), Steve Zahn (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Kim Dickens (TV’s Deadwood), Melissa Leo (Welcome to the Rileys), John Goodman (HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack), Michiel Huisman (The Young Victoria) and classical violinist Lucia Micarelli.
The series also features cameos by notable real-life New Orleanians, as well as the talents of many musicians and other artists associated with the city’s music, including Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Elvis Costello, Steve Earle and Kermit Ruffins.
