Christmas Movie Advent Calendar Day 21: Miracle On 34th Street

Miracle on 34th Street 1947 movie sceneThere’s something so sweet and comforting in believing in Santa Claus, and a movie that tells us it’s ok to believe? Priceless. Miracle On 34th Street is the No. 5 movie in Disc Dish‘s countdown of the 25 best Christmas movies.

We like the original 1947 version of this film best, although the 1994 remake with Richard Attenborough (Jurassic Park) as Kris Kringle, Elizabeth Perkins (TV’s Weeds) as the cynical mother and the adorable Mara Wilson (Mrs. Doubtfire) as the little girl who believes, gets an honorable mention.

In the 1947 film, Edmund Gwenn (A Woman of Distinction) plays Kris Kringle, Maureen O’Hara (Rio Grande) is the cynical mother and Natalie Wood (Rebel Without a Cause) is her daughter.

In the movie, Macy’s events director O’Hara hires Gwenn to play the Macy’s Santa, but when she finds out he calls himself Kris Kringle and claims to be the real Santa Claus, she gets suspicious about the man. However, other people, especially her daughter (Wood) see that there’s something special about Kringle, and he slowly begins to bring back the Christmas spirit despite the commercial motives around him. But Kringle’s insistence that he’s the real Santa Claus gets him institutionalized as being insane, until he’s put on trail and begins to change the minds of the lawyer and judge.

A timeless classic for every age, Miracle On 34th Street is available on DVD and Blu-ray from 20th Century Home Entertainment.
