Breaking Glass, the seminal 1980 musical movie about the London punk and new wave scene starring English rock queen Hazel O’Connor, received its U.S. DVD and Blu-ray debut on Aug. 16, 2011, from Olive Films.
Written and directed by Brian Gibson, the film focuses on Kate (O’Connor), the lead singer of a rock group called — surprise! — Breaking Glass. Kate’s socialist ways of thinking slam up against those of her pragmatic manager, Danny (Phil Daniels, Quadrophenia), a streetwise hustler who discovers her and tries to maker her into a star.
Ms. O’Connor, who’s still an active recording and performing artist, wrote and performed 13 songs in the film, which co-stars Jon Finch (Macbeth) and a young Jonathan Pryce (Brazil) as the band’s junkie saxophone player.
No special features are on the DVD, which was remastered in high definition from a 35mm archive print and carries a list price of $24.95.

Breaking Glass is a suberb film that I saw many times in my teens. This weekend I got the soundtrack out for the first time in years. I really had forgotten just how good the film and the album actually are! The music is much better than the wish wash that gets air play today…..and ofcourse the lyrics actually mean something….the messages are as appropriate today as they were back in the 80’s. I will certainly be getting this when it comes out, my VHS cassette is very tired and so is my video player. This is a must for any music/film buff!
This movie taught me to think for myself and question authority at a time when all I wanted to do was fit in. I have carried the songs with me through the decades and have NEVER stopped loving them. The only thing that has been missing is the movie. This re-release is so VERY long over due…I have already pre-ordered my Blu-ray copy….WE CAN ALL USE A LITTLE HAZEL!!!!
What’s Hazel O’Connor up to these days, anyway?
