The Cabin in the WoodsJoss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers) brings his particular brand of twisted comedy and horror to the old teens-on-a-weekend-getaway genre in The Cabin in the Woods.

The movie’s group of teens consists of Kristen Connolly (TV’s As the World Turns), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anna Hutchison (TV’s Go Girls), Fran Kranz (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules) and Jesse Williams (TV’s Grey’s Anatomy), and they’re off to a cousin’s cabin in the woods for some much needed R&R before exams. The surprise is, we find out early on that they’re not you’re average dumb teens despite their good looks.

But the further surprise is, every move they make is being monitored by staffers in a some kind of bunker, headed by Richard Jenkins (Friends With Benefits) and Bradley Whitford (TV’s The Good Guys), with some muscle from Brian White (TV’s Men of a Certain Age). And they have an agenda for the teens’ weekend away.

Lauded by critics with a whopping 90% approval rating, according to Rotten Tomatoes, The Cabin in the Woods thrilled this critic to two viewings in theaters. Still, the film grossed a relatively low $42 million in the U.S., considering other horror comedies.

Take it from us: If you missed this movie in theaters, try it on DVD or Blu-ray. Plenty of bloodletting for horror fans, but for those who like to think a bit in their films, there’s plenty of campy comedy.
