Blu-ray Release: Smallville: The Complete Series

Blu-ray Release Date: Oct. 19, 2021
Price: Blu-ray $159.99
Studio: Warner

Smallville, the beloved TV show that redefined the origins of the legendary hero Superman, bid goodbye to fans in May, 2011, wrapping up the series’ 10 seasons with a two-hour series finale on the CW. That final episode was broadcast only a couple of weeks after the terrorist Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. Quite a while ago, hmmm?

In commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the premiere of this unabashed hit series (it premiered on October 16, 2001), Warner is releasing Smallville: The Complete Series 20th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray on October 19. This marks the series’ first-ever release on Blu-ray. It will also be available on DVD.

The set features all 218 episodes of the show along with a whopping 28-plus hours of bonus features that were originally released on the Smallville Seasons 1-10 DVD sets. All in, the handsomely package set comes on 42 discs (broken down into 40 BD-50s + 2 DVD-9s for the bonus materials).

It’s all here – from Krypton refugee Kal-El’s arrival on Earth through his tumultuous teen years to Clark Kent’s final steps toward embracing his destiny as the Man of Steel. It’s a solid decade of thrills, adventure, action and romance, smartly flavored with a lot of heart and humor. And it’s all marvelously anchored by a fine, infectious performance by Tom Welling as young Clark Kent, the man who would become the greatest of superheroes. Up, up and away, dude!

There have been numerous cast members and guest stars on the show over the years. Our favorites include Kristin Kreuk (TV’s Chuck) as Lana Lang, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor,  Annette O’Toole (48 Hrs.) as Martha Kent and John Schneider (TV’s The Dukes of Hazzard) as Jonathan Kent.

Oh, and let’s give a shout-out to the most important members in the credit crawl: Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster!

Okay, so here’s a breakdown of the bonus features which, again, clock in at more than 28 hours:

-The Adventures of Superboy – The original 1961 pilot starring John Rockwell.
-A Retrospective Look at the Series’ 10-Year Journey – An in-depth, season-by-season look at the creation of this landmark television series. Highlights include interviews with Tom Welling, Eric Durance, Michael Rosenbaum, Phil Morris, John Schneider and many more, as well as rare behind-the-scenes footage.
-A Decade of Comic-Con Featurette
-Paley Festival Featurette
-Smallville’s 100th Episode: Making of a Milestone – An extended version of the original featurette included in the Season 5 set.
-Secret Origin: The American Story of DC Comics – A feature length documentary chronicling DC’s 75 years of challenges, creativity, and triumph.
-Audio CommentariesDeleted and Extended Scenes, Gag Reels, Behind-the-scenes featurettes and much more from all 10 seasons!

Oh, and there’s also a U.S.-only digital code included!

Meanwhile, check out this conversation between co-star Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum from the 2021 DC FanDome’s Smallville 20th Anniversary Celebration on October 16!
