New Release: Gettysburg/Gods and Generals Limited Edition DVD and Blu-ray

Warner Home Video released director Ronald Maxwell’s historical war movies Gettysburg and Gods and Generals on Blu-ray on May 24, 2011, in time for Memorial Day on May 30. But if you want both films, you might want to purchase them in the double-feature Limited Collector’s Edition set Warner issued on July 4, 2011.

1993’s Gettysburg stars Tom Berenger (Inception) and Martin Sheen (Love Happens) and follows the battle between the Confederacy and the Union in summer 1863. The film is based on Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Killer Angels and filmed at the actual battle locations. Released in theaters in 2003, Gods and Generals, about the rise and fall of legendary war hero Stonewall Jackson, stars Robert Duvall (Get Low) as General Robert E. Lee.

Warner released its Gettysburg/Gods and Generals Limited Collector’s Edition on DVD and Blu-ray. Both of the movies are director’s cuts.

Gettysburg director’s cut includes 17 minutes of additional footage, plus:

• commentary by director/screenwriter Maxwell, cinematographer Kees Van Oostrum, Pulitzer Prize-Winning author James M. McPherson and military historian Craig Symonds

• theatrical trailer

Gods and Generals extended director’s cut incorporates an hour of footage, plus:

• new introduction by executive producer Ted Turner and Maxwell
• new commentary by Maxwell and historical advisors Col. Keith Gibson and James I.Robertson Jr.
• three featurettes: “Journey to the Past: The African-American Slave Experience in the Film’s Era,” “The Life of Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson” and “The Authenticies of the Film”
• music video of Bob Dylan’s “Cross the Green Mountain”
• theatrical trailer
