News: Cinderella coming to Blu-ray

CinderellaDisney has scheduled another of its classic animated films for release on high-definition Blu-ray. In announcing the date for its Lady and the Tramp Diamond Edition, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment said it will deliver Cinderella on Blu-ray in fall 2012.

The 1950 movie is one of the most beloved in Disney’s vault. It’s that classic fairy tale story that has been revisited so many times in books and films, but never quite in the same way as Disney.

Of course, the film tells the story of the cinder girl who’s prevented by her evil stepmother from going to the Royal Ball. But her fairy godmother, some lovable mice and a pumpkin get Cinderella there, and just in time for her to dance with the prince. When the magic wears off at midnight, Cinderella loses her glass slipper, but not before the prince has fallen in love with her. He takes the slipper to all the ladies of the kingdom trying to find his true love.

The G-rated film, which runs for 74 minutes, was nominated for three Academy Awards for sound, score and the sony “Bibbidy-Bobbidi-Boo.” Although it didn’t take home any statues, the movie is a classic that’s squarely in the hearts of all Disney animation lovers.

Cinderella was released as a Platinum Edition DVD in 2005, and although it’s now on moratorium, a few copies can still be found.

The new edition of the animated movie will be released as part of Disney’s Diamond Edition line, which also already includes Bambi, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.

Many of those earlier Diamond Edition DVD and Blu-ray releases include new special features as well as extras from earlier DVDs, so we’re guessing Cinderella won’t be an exception. If we’re right, the new DVD and Blu-ray could contain all or some of these extras, which are on the Platinum Edition DVD:

  • “From Rags to Riches: The Making of Cinderella
  • “The Cinderella That Almost Was”
  • 1922 Cinderella Laugh-o-gram
  • Reconstructed deleted songs “The Cinderella Work Song” and “Dancing On a Cloud”
  • “From Walt’s Table: A Tribute to Disney’s Nine Old Men”
  • “The Art of Mary Blair”
  • Storyboard to film comparison of the opening sequence
  • Stills frame and slideshow galleries
  • Excerpt from The Mickey Mouse Club with Helene Stanley
  • Original trailers
  • “Cinderella and Perry Como”
  • Three radio programs
  • Audio of Cinderella title song
  • Audio of seven unused songs
  • “House of Royalty: Sally Learns How to be a Princess”
  • “Princess Pajama Jam”
  • ESPN Classic’s Cinderella Stories
  • and music videos for Disney’s Circle of Stars “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and “Every Girl Can Be a Princess,” featuring Disney’s animated princesses.
