New Release: Pretty Bird DVD

Movie scene from Pretty Bird with Paul GiamattiPlayed at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, comedy movie Pretty Bird finally got its DVD debut on June 29, 2010.

Based on a true story, Paramount Home Entertainment‘s film stars Paul Giamatti (The Last Station) as a man who enlists his friends to help him build a rocket belt, but the partnership takes a toll on the friendship as mismatched personalities clash. Unexpected success leads to retaliation and kidnapping, as the American dream goes wrong.

Watchmen‘s Billy Crudup, TV actor Garret Dillahunt (CSI, Law & Order: SVU) and True Blood‘s Anna Camp also star.

Pretty Bird is the directorial debut of actor Paul Schnieder, who’s in TV’s Parks & Recreation and indie films Lars and the Real Girl and Away We Go. Schnieder also write Pretty Bird.

The movie, which is rated R for language and sexuality, didn’t have a theatrical run other than film festivals. So it’s a DVD premiere.

In an Entertainment Weekly article about the movie’s showing at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Adam B. Vary describes the film as having a “mordantly off-kilter sense of humor,” and said some viewers wondered why it was in the festival at all.
